Rethinking the Sunni-Shiite Split | Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally

As a ceasefire takes hold in Iran, many Muslims are left wondering where their loyalties should lie. Should sectarian divisions influence how we respond to the suffering of fellow Muslims? Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally explore the origins of the Sunni-Shi’i split, which began as a political disagreement over who should succeed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but later developed into significant theological differences. They explain how Sunnis and Shi’is diverged on the nature of leadership and the continuation of divine guidance. They also reflect on how early tensions evolved into deeply entrenched divisions. Despite these historical differences, Dr. Shabir urges Muslims to remember their shared core -- belief in the same Quran, love for the Prophet, and commitment to the five pillars of Islam -- and to approach one another with compassion and unity, especially in moments of collective pain. When Drinking Is the Norm, Why Do Muslims Say No? | Dr. Shabir Ally

When Drinking Is the Norm, Why Do Muslims Say No? | Dr. Shabir Ally

Dr. Shabir Ally addresses a viewer’s question about why Islam completely forbids alcohol, especially in a society like Canada where drinking is normalized in schools and workplaces. He explains that Islam encourages Muslims to uphold their principles regardless of social norms, and that alcohol is clearly prohibited due to its numerous harms (both personal and societal). These include addiction, health issues (like cancer and liver disease), fetal harm, impaired judgment, domestic violence, and drunk driving. While some medical studies once suggested limited benefits, more recent research indicates that even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful. Islam's prohibition is ultimately rooted in divine command, but the wisdom behind it becomes clear when we consider the widespread damage alcohol can cause. Muslims are encouraged to avoid places where alcohol is served to protect themselves and set a positive example, and awareness about this position is gradually gaining more respect in Canadian society. From Our Viewers

I'm a graduate student in psychology and I started reading more in depth of the Holy Quran. I'm constantly making connections between the Holy Quran and renowned theories in the world of psychology. Thank you so much for your all your work. It has helped me to foster a deeper understanding of this peaceful religion!

I’ve often commented on your videos. I have some news. I took my shahadah three weeks ago now and have accepted Islam. My decision was of course not just based on your videos, but they were a great source of information to me, so thank you. My ultimate goal was and is to serve God. I found that I could do that best in Islam. I’m a European white woman (not that it matters) and am compelled to say my decision was in no way influenced by or for anyone else.

The show answers so many questions and helps me to see the truth of Islam, as opposed to the many rumours that are floating around out there. And most especially in Canada, seeing a woman leading the direction of each show puts to rest all the rumours about how Muslim woman are treated badly.

I really love your videos. I am not a Muslim myself but just learning more about Islamic theology has given me a greater understanding and respect for the faith. And the two Dr. Allys have a really great perspective on life in general.
