Jesus and the Renewal of Faith: Emphasizing the Spirit of the Law

Throughout history, God has sent messengers to guide humanity, each bringing a renewal of faith suited to the needs of their time. Among these messengers, Jesus (PBUH) holds a special role, particularly in renewing the faith of the Children of Israel and highlighting the deeper purpose of divine law.
Restoring the Spirit Behind the Law
By the time of Jesus (PBUH), the Torah had often been interpreted in a highly legalistic way. Many focused on strict observance of rules rather than the spirit and intention behind them. Jesus (PBUH) came to renew the faith by returning the focus to the essence of the law, clarifying its true purpose, and showing that divine guidance is meant for the benefit of people.
The Quran emphasizes this role. Jesus (PBUH) is described as one who confirms the Torah while also permitting what had previously been forbidden, according to God’s wisdom. His mission was to demonstrate that God’s law exists not as a burden, but to guide humanity toward righteousness. The miracles he performed served as signs of his divine mission, calling people to worship God alone and follow the straight path.
Harmony with the Teachings of the Bible
The New Testament also reflects this approach. In Matthew 23:1-3, Jesus (PBUH) instructs his followers to respect the teachings of Moses (PBUH) and the Jewish leaders, but not to imitate their actions if they fail to practice what they preach. This shows that Jesus (PBUH) upheld the law while encouraging his followers to focus on integrity, intention, and the spirit of divine guidance.
Furthermore, Jesus (PBUH) affirmed the oneness of God, saying that God is his God and the God of his followers, reinforcing the principle of monotheism found in both the Quran and the Bible.
Love, Ease, and Balance Over Legalism
One of Jesus’ (PBUH) most profound contributions was emphasizing love over strict legalism. In the Sermon on the Mount, he taught that while the law allowed for hatred toward enemies, the higher calling was to love and pray for those who persecute us. Similarly, he clarified that the Sabbath was made for the benefit of humanity, not to impose unnecessary hardship, highlighting the balance between law and compassion.
The Quran similarly encourages moderation and ease. While laws exist to guide human behavior, the religion emphasizes balance, mercy, and practicality. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) exemplified this by consistently choosing the easier permissible path when faced with multiple options, showing that God’s guidance is meant to facilitate life, not make it unnecessarily difficult.
Lessons for Today
The teachings of Jesus (PBUH) offer timeless guidance: the law should serve humanity, and spiritual understanding should guide actions. Likewise, the Quran encourages a balanced approach that avoids both strict legalism and laxity, promoting a path of moderation, compassion, and integrity.
Reflecting on these principles reminds us to focus on the spirit behind divine guidance in our daily lives. By embracing this balance, we can cultivate a faith that is both righteous and practical, one that honors God while benefiting humanity.
