Imam Ayman Taher on Building Emotionally Safe, Healthy and Meaningful Marriages

Marriage is one of the most important relationships in our lives, but building a healthy and lasting marriage requires more than love alone. It requires communication, emotional safety, mutual understanding, friendship, and a willingness to grow together.

On Let The Quran Speak, we welcomed Imam Ayman Taher, an imam and registered psychotherapist who has worked extensively with individuals and couples, to discuss the challenges people face in marriage and how couples can build stronger, healthier relationships.

In this conversation, Imam Taher explored some of the key factors that shape a healthy Muslim marriage, from emotional safety and communication to compatibility, intimacy, friendship and spiritual connection. He also discussed how couples can navigate differences, prepare for marriage and build relationships that remain strong through life's challenges.

Creating Emotional Safety in Marriage

Imam Taher identified a lack of emotional safety as one of the most common challenges he encounters among couples. Emotional safety means feeling accepted, appreciated, heard, welcomed and able to be vulnerable without fear of judgment or criticism. He explained that childhood experiences, attachment patterns, personality differences and cultural expectations can all shape how people experience safety and connection within marriage.

Understanding the Baggage We Bring Into Marriage

People do not enter marriage as blank slates. Our childhood experiences and family environments can influence how we communicate, respond to conflict and seek reassurance from our spouses. Imam Taher discussed the importance of recognizing these patterns and understanding how psychological, cultural and interpersonal differences can affect the relationship.

Moving Beyond Rigid Gender Roles

Imam Taher also explored how traditional expectations about the roles of husbands and wives can sometimes create tension. Rather than treating gender roles as rigid, he encouraged couples to recognize their individual strengths and differences and work together in a flexible way. A healthy marriage, he explained, is one in which spouses support each other and allow each person's abilities to contribute to the wellbeing of the family.

Communication That Brings Couples Together

Healthy communication is essential for creating emotional safety. Imam Taher encouraged couples to move away from blame-focused language and instead approach problems as something they can work through together. Learning to express concerns without making the other person feel attacked can help couples address difficulties while protecting their sense of connection.

The Importance of Friendship in Marriage

A strong marriage is about more than romance. Imam Taher emphasized the importance of friendship between spouses and described it as a vital foundation for a healthy relationship. Building companionship and genuinely enjoying one another's presence can help couples maintain their connection through the challenges and changes that come with life.

Building Sacred Intimacy

Imam Taher described marital intimacy as something that develops through multiple dimensions of connection. He discussed spiritual, recreational, social and intellectual intimacy, explaining that these forms of connection can strengthen the emotional bond between spouses and create a foundation for physical intimacy.

Growing Spiritually Together

Marriage can also be a shared spiritual journey. Imam Taher spoke about the importance of couples engaging in worship and acts of devotion together, from praying to participating in religious activities as a family. He described marriage as a sacred bond through which spouses can support one another in their faith and work toward a shared spiritual purpose.

Making Time for Recreation and Social Connection

Spending meaningful time together does not always require elaborate plans. Imam Taher encouraged couples and families to create opportunities for recreation, whether through sharing a meal, taking a walk, attending community events or simply spending time together. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining social connections outside the home and engaging positively with the wider community.

Growing Together Intellectually

Intellectual connection is another way couples can strengthen their relationship. Imam Taher encouraged spouses to discuss ideas, current events, social issues and other interests together, even when they do not share exactly the same perspectives or hobbies. Learning from each other and engaging in meaningful conversations can create another layer of connection within the family.

Preparing for Marriage and Choosing a Partner

Imam Taher emphasized that building a healthy marriage begins before the wedding. Rather than focusing only on attraction or religious practice, he encouraged people considering marriage to pay attention to a potential partner's character and how they respond to stress, financial difficulties and challenging situations. He also discussed the importance of seeking trusted advice and using both istikhara and consultation when making such an important decision.

Navigating Marriage in a Changing World

Finding a compatible partner can be particularly challenging for Muslims living in North America, where communities can be geographically dispersed and traditional methods of meeting potential spouses may not always be practical. Imam Taher discussed how technology and social media can be used carefully and within appropriate Islamic boundaries to help people navigate the search for a spouse.

Building Resilient Marriages

Marriage inevitably brings difficult periods, including illness, loss, financial challenges and other major life changes. Imam Taher emphasized that these challenges do not necessarily have to divide couples. When spouses have built strong emotional, spiritual and interpersonal connections, they can draw on those foundations to support one another and become more resilient together.

Marriage is a lifelong journey that requires ongoing communication, understanding and growth. Imam Ayman Taher's conversation with Safiyyah Ally offers practical and faith-informed insights into how couples can create relationships rooted in emotional safety, friendship, spiritual connection and mutual support.
